2030 Vision for Sustainable Transport in Addis Ababa
Planning is a dynamic process. Achieving the ‘optimum’ planning solution must be a robust mixture and combination of considerations – striking a balance between political considerations, multiple stakeholder needs as well as spatial planning objectives and goals. As planning affects society as a whole, it is an iterative process which actively involves stakeholders.
Stakeholders include anyone that will be impacted by the proposed plan and as transport is the backbone of economic and social life in Addis, that means everyone who lives and works in the city is a stakeholder!
As the overall vision and the sub-sector plans are developed for Addis Ababa, the Consultant’s team has identified key stakeholder groups and will ask for their input into the plan’s detail. These include formally recognised group or entities including government departments, civil society organisations and NGOs, universities, businesses and business representative groups. Many of the civil society organisations and NGOs that will be consulted represent and defend the interests of vulnerable groups/women – such as elderly residents representative groups, the Ethiopian Centre for Disability and Development (ECDD) and Addis Ababa Women Association.
All members of the public will also be invited to give their feedback on the proposed SCTDP plans. There will be two rounds of public consultation and you can provide your feedback and ideas in two ways:
- Attend the Public Information Sessions and provide feedback to the Consultant’s team.
- View the publicly available information and documents on this webpage and submit a comment in the comment space below.
– There are numerous other projects and studies being conducted in the City. How Vision 2030 should consider about the coordination or integration with other projects currently of coming few years running? – To regularly assess the impacts and improve according to state-of-the-art technologies active researches and studies are very important. Main inputs of research and studies are real time information and reliable data. The traffic flow and cost data are not collected in a systematic and regular way in the City. There is no reliable information on the quantum of traffic carried by road transport either for freight or… Read more »
Thank you for your very useful points. In terms of coordination with other relevant projects in the city, the Ramboll team is engaging with a wide range of consultants and other stakeholders that are implementing transport related studies and projects. This includes TRANSIP programme to redesign and improve a significant number of traffic intersections and the Bus Rapid Transit work. Moving forward, once completed with detailed sub-sector strategy, this Transport Plan will allow the City Authority to coordinate all transport related infrastructure and services interventions in a coordinated way, along side the City Masterplan. Regarding data collection, this is also… Read more »
AA transport shuld be planned and designed for persons with disability so that it will fit for all.
Thank you. Disability inclusion and universal design are central considerations for transport infrastructure and services, as well as the pedestrian environment, and will be strongly promoted in the 10 year strategy for Addis Ababa.
Hi Team, I Assume your client (AACC) is responsible for AA city transport services (excluding state highways-if any), from roads and footpaths, to cycling, parking and public transport. • in terms of Sustainability I am not sure your proposal but I was hoping some major initiatives such as upgrading street light infrastructures, electric bus trial, introducing electric and hybrid cars with EV chargers and so on.. • I am afraid I do not see any parking strategy sets out in your proposal to the management of car parking in Addis Ababa (both on- and off-street), which explains how parking management… Read more »
Thank you for your comments on these important points. More detailed sub-sector transport strategies will be developed in the coming months as part of the 10 Year Transport Strategy for Addis, which will address many of these points. As far as possible, we will also make sure that the Consultant team incorporates the points you have raised in the revised ‘Vision 2030’.
Ladies and Gentlemen I hope this comment finds you well. I very much appreciate the focus on public transport and improvement of the situation of pedestrians in your draft “Vision”. I would at first like to focus on the goals and activities connected to “cycling”. I spent 2,5 years in Addis Ababa working for the German-Ethiopian development cooperation (GIZ) as an urban planner, cooperating with the Addis Ababa City Administration in 2007 -2010, which is quite some time ago. At first, when I arrived in Addis Ababa, I was wondering why there were no bicycles – very different from all… Read more »
Thank you for your excellent points on the constraints and opportunities for cycling and e-bikes. We will address this in the revised ‘Vision 2030’ and subsequent sub-sector transport strategies.
